Good PR Bad PR has been on my mind for some time now. With this day and age and everything being electronic with internet, news pretty much lasts forever! That can be very good or very bad. I don't really know how I feel about that. I guess if you make sure that you always stay on top of your business and have an excellent PR team this would be great.
jcom 2300 16 and 17
I am putting together a Public Relations portfolio for Preston's Jcom class and it has really put prespective on how much work and preparation it takes to have a good portfolio. I really need to work hard next semester getting worthly items into my portfolio.
jcom 2300 14 and 15
Refer any media to representatives responsible for handling the media. If you do choose to comment make it brief and clear. If you don't want to comment at all it is ok to say "No comment". Also, to be prepared if you know something is going on, don't ignore the fact that you might be questioned.
For a work promotion recently the "Valley Channel" came and interviewed me and did a feature story on "Locker 42" a store here in Logan that I work at.
It was definitely a surprise, so I didn't have much time to prepare any statements. I guess that says always be prepared! It went really well, I just showed them around the store, highlighting our new items in the store and gave many gift ideas. It was a lot of fun!

Outline for Presentation
Outline
Introduce our group
Amanda Kramer-
-Add another section with a new professor
-Have a greater oversee of how Mass Media Law is run and grades are distributed
- 3,000-4,000 dollars for endowed professor (executive in residence)
-With such a respected PR program at USU, Mass Media Law course must be the highest quality of education offered.
-Due to the large amount of students in Mass Media Law, it is impossible for the professor to give adequate time and attention to his/her students.
-Currently, the Mass Media Law course lacks creativity and diversity. Bringing in a new professor who exemplifies these qualities in their teaching methods will only add to the respectable reputation. (Pedagogy)
Amy is going to discuss:
-The current class room capacity
-The breakdown of grade distribution
-How she is viewed by her students (signatures)
-Want the Department Head to monitor the current Mass Media Law course because we are not purposing for a removal of the existing professor
Amanda is going to discuss:
-$$$
-Endowed professor (executive in residence)
-How much it will cost to add an additional section
-We want to have a lawyer come in and teach that has a JD or Jurist doctorate
-Not public tax payer’s money (we can pick whoever we want to be the executive in residence) Donated money for that specific purpose.

Jcom 2300 Week 7: 12 and 13
Biggest rivals of the state , Brigham Young University against Utah University.
Saturday's 48-24 win over BYU stirred up a lot of emotions of an ultimate high or low. This article got me thinking about what it is like to be a PR rep for a sports team. Pretty intense is all that comes to my mind. Everything would be high energy and fast paced, as you are not only dealing with the image of the team you are representing, also with all the fans that come with that team or their opposing rivalry team, like in the case of this BYU vs. U of U game.
The next article I read was about PR culturally. This caught my attention immediately as I have wanted to work and do PR outside of the United States. I liked this quote:
" PR practitioners are aware of how best to carry this out when dealing within their own nations and cultures, however, when dealing with a foreign audience it is critical that cross cultural differences are recognised." Said Neil Payne from Kwintessential .
An example of how different PR can be across the world is shown :
" Pepsodent tried to sell its toothpaste in Southeast Asia by emphasizing that it "whitens your teeth." They found out that the local natives chew betel nuts to blacken their teeth because they found it attractive. Had the PR company behind this campaign analysed the cross cultural issues related to Pepsodent's product, the failure of this PR campaign could have been avoided."
Wow. That definitely puts a huge impact on the way PR should be used and the research that should go into it before applied.

Jcom 2300 week 6 :10 and 11
I thought since this year is an election year and the national vote day is on tuesday of next week, which is Nov. 4, 2008. I thought it would be appropriate to look up some election news, as you can probably imagine this wasn't hard to do at all.
The most recent article I could find was one on "factcheck.org." This website is set up so people can read the latest news on the Presidentail candidates and to acknowledge all the "facts" that go along with that candidate.
In Presidental elections Public Relations is huge. Each candidates team has to be amazing as they deal with crisis and celebration issues almost every single day.
#11
After looking at the "factcheck.org" website I linked to one of the articles they had posted, it was a summary of the last five weeks of ads and articles.
"Since our first "Whoppers of 2008" piece, we've seen some of the same themes repeated. McCain's campaign doesn't tire of distorting Obama's tax plan, it seems, and in the process has whipped up at least 15 minutes of fame for sudden star Joe the Plumber. Obama continues trying to pull seniors into his camp by making deceptive claims about what McCain would do to Social Security, and he has new distortions about his opponent's plans for Medicare."
After reading this paprgraph I was overwhelmed as I knew how much stress, confusion, late nights and hard work had gone into each rebutal to, or claim against, the other members political party by the Public Relations Specialist teams.
I don't know if I could handle doing PR for a political party.

jcom 2300 week 5:#9
The best part is that it's true! "Delish" meals company is one that is very unquie as they are trying to promote their new healthly Mexican meals. They offer everthing from "Guiltless Gauamole" to " Creme Caramel". Pretty much their PR rep rocks! They have me as a new customer and I don't usually fall for these things! Pretty sweet use of some good PR.
jcom 2300 week 5: # 8
Drive Sales and Visibility”. This was something I was interested in reading about. After watching the You tube video and reading things provided I realized that PR Web’s Public Relations Specialist is very experienced as they got me to want to buy into their product.
Some of the things they suggested are below:
Reach 100,000 contacts
Increase traffic to your website
Optimize your ranking in search engines like Google
Guarantee placement of your press release on top sites like Yahoo! News
Post your release to media outlets like USA Today
Track how many people view your headline and read your release
Once I start working for a specific company or even with my blog releases , I think it would be very beneficial to do these suggestion's.

Liberty Homes
Salt Lake City, UT
Buy a Home and Grant a Wish!
LOGAN, Utah Liberty Homes a home building company in Salt Lake City, gives more than just homes, they also fulfill children’s dreams.
For three years Liberty Homes has built homes for the annual Home Show, held in Salt Lake City, and held by the Home Show Association of Greater Salt Lake. Founder and President Dave Clark says “Liberty Homes takes pride in building a quality home for the best value, we also find it very important to give back to our community. One way we do this is through the Make a Wish Organization.”
After building a home for the Home Show, inside there is a whole room dedicated for a child and their wish. Just this past summer of 2008, Liberty Homes granted a girl named Sydney Hess, her wish. Sydney is 15 years old and has had her rare form of cancer for about a year now. Sydney’s wish was that she wanted to ride a horse on the beach. Sydney’s wish was granted and room was made.
“When walking into Sydney’s room immediately you were to feel like you were on that beach, watching Sydney ride her horse” said Interior Designer Rochelle Clark. Sydney’s room was complete with bamboo, fake grass, a big umbrella, palm tree and pictures all over the room of Sydney riding her horse.
Founder and President, Dave Clark “Feels like it is always good to help someone out in their own problems as it helps me maintain proper prospective in life. I have been given so much that the Make a Wish Organization has allowed me to give a small little something back.”
Liberty Homes is a company that you can trust, as they really do give back to the community. So, why not? Buy a Home and Grant a Wish!

JCOM 2300 week 4: #7
This immediately caught my attention, and after I had read the article I realized that this was the best PR for people trying to sell a house in this area (Fisher Island), brokers, realtors, and the overall housing community across the country.
“When the most conventional wisdom about real estate has been proved wrong.” I loved comments like these and many others as it brings hope, fire and a overall happiness to readers. Even if they don’t live in this area or have anything to do with the housing market, it still shows a sign of improvement, which then makes people happy to read this good news. Great PR article, I learned a lot from reading it.

LOGAN, Utah Liberty Homes a home building company in Salt Lake City, gives more than just homes, they also fulfill childrens dreams.
Founder and Owner, Dave Clark says "building your top quality home for the best price, is one aspect we take pride in. We also think that giving back is a way to move forward."
Among many other charity events including a top donator to Eagle Condor Humanitarin Foundation, the company works very closely with "Make a Wish". I will name my favorite five:
1. Your writing gets better when you allow a few days in between your writing. This lets you take a step back and see what is missing from your article.
2. Does your article pass the "So What" test?
3. What kind of media do you want your article to appear?
4. Editing is huge! Make sure not only you edit your article, but have someone else edit as well.
5. Will your article if published, break any confidentiality or start any problems?
PR 2300 week 3, #5
The dictionary defines public relations as "Communication with various sectors of the public to influence their attitudes and opinions in the interest of promoting a person, product, or idea."
By reading this definition you would think that Public Relations is one of the easiest ways of media. I would go as far as easiest but I would say that it is a form that is very reasonable as long as you have a passion and care to do what it takes to succeed, just like everything else in the world. There is so much media out there that in order for the media to succeed, they need information that is both useful and entertaining for their readers matter of prioritizing your goals and leveraging the resources that you do have available to take advantage of what is an invaluable marketing tactic. Here are some helpful tips the website suggested in being successful in PR.
1. Create several creative story pitches. 2. Match your target audience with the right media channels. 3. Have a spokesperson or PR firm represent your company. 4. Take advantage of your opportunities when they present themselves. 5. Follow up with your contacts.

PR 2300 second week- # 4
This really caught my eye because very close people to me are deeply in the real estate business and so it put a smile on my face when I saw this ( even though, after recent events this has probably changed).
"The Senate's bold action will help the country emerge from the
current credit crisis and put the economy back on its way to improved
financial and housing stability." Said,PRnewswire.
I love how this articled stated that we can unclog our financial pipeline. Also by doing this liquidity will be greatly improved, which gives people hope and the ablility to be able to get loans. Mortgages will be easier to come by, making people and families fulfill their dream by living in a house.
But this act requires many different people and finanical institutions to all work together under one roof and make this happen.
"This far-reaching and meaningful legislation would go a long way in
helping restore confidence in the nation's financial system," said NAR
President Richard F. Gaylord. "Provisions in the bill would directly
benefit Main Street by making financing more available. The legislation
would not only help make home mortgages more available, which would help
stabilize home sales and prices, but also help families who are trying to
secure a car loan or borrow money to send their children to college. It
would help protect Americans' retirement savings and small businesses
across the country."
I agree with this statement and with the main point of this article. I hope many will read it and gain something from it as well.
PR 2300- second week # 3
Everyone knows that the events of our Governments decisions and our economony as a whole right now are pretty scarey. That is a big part of why I liked this release. I felt that it gave across a sense of pride to be able to be in this profession, as well as a sense of hope for better years to come.
I really liked the first sentence, "During difficult economic times, it's especially important to make smart career investments that will ensure your future growth and success."
I completely agree with this and am so glad that it immediately caught my eye, because I was able to learn about something as cool as PRSA 2008 conference and PRSA as an oraganization.
This event is one to remember with 100 workshops, genreal sessions, networking dinners and key note speakers like:Craiglist's Craig Newmark, GM's Bob Lutz, “Brazen Careerist” author and blogger Penelope Trunk, best-selling author of “Tuesdays With Morrie” and “For One More Day” Mitch Albom; and Lou Capozzi, Business for Diplomatic Action board member and chairman emeritus of Publicis Public Relations and Corporate Communications Group.
I truly believe that if a person is planning on being something in this industry, than they need to get out there and start DOING. To me, this would be the perfect start.
Plus, when you pay for this conference you also get a National PRSA memebership for one year!

Learn true Financial Independence from Cache Valley Area Investors Association.
LOGAN, UT- Cache Valley Area Investors Association is a Non-Profit Organization that started in July 2007. The Organizations main goal is to teach people how to be financially independent.
President Preston Parker says, “The goal is to get your passive income to surpass your expenses.” Passive Income, which include: investments, gifts, basically no thought required to earn money. Active (earned) Income- devoting thought to earn money.
When all your expenses are paid by your income, you don’t have to worry about anything. Parker says that “One of biggest cankers in American history is people hating their jobs.” People will no longer have to go to their hated job because they have to; they will go to their job because they want to. You do not have to worry about a job because of the money; you worry about the job because it is something you care about.
If you quit going to your job every day, how long will you last? Most people it is only six months, because there expenses are so high. If you keep your expenses low and your Passive Income high that is true financial independence.
This is the very concept that Parker and Cache Valley Area Investors Association are trying to implement. “Very few of us out there are giving this money information away for free. I know of three in Utah. We are trying to get the word out for people to get educated.”
You might ask why? What is in it for him? When asked that question by a reporter Preston said “You come to a point when your financial independence is so high that there just aren’t that many individuals out there that are up at that level with you. If I wanted to, I would like to find someone that can invest a high amount of money for a project I was working on.”
Cache Valley Area Investors Association meet every other Thursday at the Chamber of Commerce, 160 North Main St. at 7 p.m.. Web-site is: www.cvaia.com . Everyone is welcome to attend.

PR 2300
I recently read the PR blog of a Mr. Barbera who lives in California and was explaining his great appreciation for Robert French who has organized the Auburn PR Blog, but has taken it to different levels with the creation of PRblogs.org.
Robert has partnered with James Farmer and together they have built a PR blogging community that is offered to all people. Now not only students, but PR practitoners and educators can use this and benefit from this organization.
The purpose of PRblogs.org is to provide a service that (a) allows for experimentation with the medium, (b) a community that discusses the implications of blogs in PR and (c) to help bridge the PR education and practitioner communities.
I was really impressed by Mr. Barbera's blog post because you could tell he had a passion for what he was writing about and that he had a great appreciation to Robert French and James Farmer. I also liked that he is getting this information out to all PR students and professionals so they can benefit from this as well.

PR 2300
The web-site states that each indivdual should follow his or her own high standards and keep a professional outlook in the work place. PRSA says that the subject of professional ethics is an individual matter. By saying this they mean that every individual in the work place should step it up and take upon themselves a high standard of work. I completely agree with this, I feel like every individual should follow this in or out of the work place.
A quality employee is one that will work and work until there performance is mad e perfect. A beginner or even advanaced employee can't expect his or her work to be perfect on the very first draft.
The PRSA also talks about a personal "moral compass." This is the encouragement to ask questions, learn for yourself, seek out help, and look at your options and identify what should be the apporiate behavior. When you follow the "moral compass" you can be assured taht things will be done fairly.
The new code values empasizes things like being honest, having indepence, expertise, and loyalty. As a public relations professional it is our job to make sure things are presented in a clear, precise way so the client can see the vision and what the outline will be. We also have to be honest and give the information in the best possible way.
PRSA gave a lot of great information that I think not only journalists should follow but all kinds of peeople in and out of the work force.

ABC Real Estate LLC
President Preston Parker
LOOKING TO INVEST?
ABC Real Estate, a new company here in Logan is looking for investors, buyers, and individuals with good credit. President Preston Parker explained about his new company and how much it differs from most. He says that ABC Real Estate uses a unique plan that no one else in Logan has.
This Nationwide Company, invented by Bill Gaten (landtrust.net), uses the Beneificary- Directed- Land Trust System which helps people that would otherwise not qualify for a home, qualify.
Most people need to be able to make a down payment with at least 3% interest, have a FICO of above 680 and low debt to income ratio. For most college students or young couples in Logan this is impossible. That is why ABC Real Estate is so valuable. “For the residents it allows them to own a home and get the tax deductions instead of just paying rent,” said Parker.
Parker says that Logan is the best place for a business like this because of the main reason being that “In over 30 years there hasn’t been a fore-closed home.” Also Logan is a place that has a high ratio for home owners and a high buyer mentality.
ABC Real Estate was founded in Jan. of 2008 and hopes to stay around for much longer as it teaches people how to use there system.

Dear Cousin
As the new academic school year has arrived I have made some pretty important decisions for my future. The main one is the decision of what my major should be. I am very excited and intrigued about my major, while at the same time I realize I have a lot to learn. I have chosen to major in the field of journalism, with an emphasis in public relations. I realize that you aren’t very familiar with my area of choice, which gives me the opportunity to explain what public relations is all about.
Public relations mainly focuses on managing information between a company, organization, or people. public relations, (PR) is a different form of marketing as one of the main ways PR professionals are successful and have “a way in”, is through the strong relationships they make with many indivdiuals they come in contact with. Some of the activities that go along with PR are working with the press and writng different kinds of press releases, public speaking, and knowing how to tactfully deal with good press and bad press for clients being represented.
The main part of PR that pulls me in and makes me want to make a career out of it, is the ability I will have to improve, start or change any company or organization that I choose. After being trained I will have the knowledge of knowing how to work with the press, write, public speak. I am very excited for the decision I have made and look forward to getting my foot into the major.
Thanks for all that you do.
Sincerely,
Brittany Clark

ile take over offer to Time Warner Inc.
As Google turned out to be the winner as they made a host take over bid for 50 billion dollars. 35 billion of which will divide evenly in cash, to the stockholders of the company, 10 billion in stock, and 5 billion in debt that Time Warner is assumed to have.
CEO Dr. Eric Schmidt said, “Google strikes while the iron is hot, and the iron is hot right now in the media industry”. This has proven to be true, I guess a congratulation is in store for Google as they have come out on top.

Practice News Story 11: Accident
TREMONTON, UT- A Utah State University van carrying Agriculture major students rolled over on Interstate 84 west of Tremonton, around 4 p.m. on today (April 17, 2008). Utah Highway Patrol responded on scene just after 4 as Lt. Jason Jensen said that he believes the cause to be from driving way too fast as that particular highway is very bumpy and heard that the van could have had some tire problems. “It was a horrific scene, the van looked like it had rolled several times and there were bodies scattered everywhere. Of my 15 years of serving this is by far the worst accident I have ever seen, something that the whole community will be affected by”, said Trooper Jensen.
After interviewing Kyle Holden, who was on the field trip with the kids but had driven separately, said that he saw the whole thing happen. The rear tire on the drivers side blew and the van started to swerve. I was starting to pass them because my cruise was set at about five over and they were in the slow lane, right as I did it tire blew. There were 11 people in the car, which included Professor Evan Parker and 10 other Agriculture students. Since it is Agriculture week , thought it would be a good idea to take the kids to see a combine in a field. Kyle said that Evan told him earlier in the trip that he had never seen a better group of students, so this is a major tragedy.
Noel Cockett who is the Dean of College of Agriculture said that there are reported to be 4 pronounced dead at the scene which would include Evan Parker. Robert Peterson and Jared Nelson are two students were life flighted and are alive. “This is really a huge tragedy as these were excellent students, and to have it happen on their “Ag” week is sickening”.
This week is Utah State’s Agriculture week, this is a week consisting of many activities that have to do with agriculture and that is why there are tractors and different farming machinery all over the campus. Noel said that those activities have been cancelled and a memorial service is in play.

LOGAN, Utah- Get In On the Secret!
Yesterday (April 9, 2008) I saw Bill and Melinda Gates, and Ted Turner getting off a private jet that flew that landed in Africa. This group of influential people were meeting with African officals for reportedly a secret philanthropic endeavor.
The Bill and Melinda Gates fondation has given aid to many indivduals as they are founded upon: The Foundation's work begins with Bill and Melinda Gates’s belief that all lives have equal value. We think all people deserve the chance to have healthy, productive lives. We have been developing a process that helps us decide how to spend our time, effort, and money so we can accomplish that goal for as many people as possible. This process helps us choose the issues we will work on and the groups to which we will make grants. After interviewing African Mayor Malik OK, I found that they will be focusing on African Children with issues of disease and santintary education. Wanting to get rid of diseases such as miseales, small pox, and HIV education and basic sanitary needs. "The main thing we want to focus on is the actual TEACHING part, i guess we would be teaching them how to fish instead of giving them a fish. We want the African people to be ok when we leave" , said Bill. Warner Buffet is involved passively as he is just giving of his money, but Ted Turner is the one who contacted us as he said that he could be more effective accomplsihing his goals with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He is very actively involved as he wants to see where is money is going" said Bill. These are just some of the grants that have been made this past year.

LOGAN, Utah-Are Ted Turner and Melinda Gates setting something up to save Africa? The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is a world wide influential organization that has made some great contributions to many people. There latest project involves the very influential Ted Turner. I saw Bill, Melinda and Ted all get off a private jet together as they were meeting with local African officials. Why were they doing this you may ask? Education is the answer. After interviewing Bill I came to find out that Ted Turner, Warner Buffet and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are putting there money towards educating the African people. “We’re teaching them how to fish instead of giving them fish, we want to be able to leave and have them be ok” says Bill. Ted Turner is the one that actually contacted Bill and Melinda, “He is very actively involved as he wants to actually see where is money is going” said Bill. Education can make a difference and that is exactly what they plan on doing.

Recover 50% faster
ClearPoint Instruction
Logan, Utah- Many people find themselves in the position of trying to recover from an accident or surgeries but don’t know where they can start.
ClearPoint Instruction LLC, a company that was founded in January of 2006, focuses on educating patients on exactly what they need to know either before or after a major surgery. ClearPoint does this with pamphlets and instructional DVD’s that have step by step instruction on what that specific patient needs to know. Everything from actually taking the patient into the surgery room and showing them what tools the doctor is going to be using to just plain facts that every patient should know before or after surgery. For instance, a patient shouldn’t eat 24 hours before surgery, and should rest 24 after.
These are facts that patients need to be educated on as, “Instruction is not effective if learners don’t clearly see the main point. Your patients will reap the benefits by using our product as is has been proven to have patients recover 50 percent faster.” Says Senior Vice President Preston Parker.
ClearPoint Instruction can design and deliver instructional workshops on a wide variety of healthcare topics. These workshops may be offered to the public in a variety of settings, including university continuing education courses, healthcare provider patient education classes, and corporate health improvement training. Organizations may provide these workshops as a means of educating employees and clients. This leads to improved health for employees and clients and reduced healthcare costs for the organization. Patients who are recovering from an illness or injury may also benefit from these workshops, as their compliance with their doctor’s orders may be significantly increased by participating in workshops.

This is a location of one of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meeting house’s.
During the early hours of the morning police believe two people broke into the
church through an open window. Deputy Jeoffrey Hasty said that there had to be two
people involved because the location of the open window was to high for just one person to get in.. “I believe that one person helped the other into the window and then went and opened the door for the other person”.
Bishop Lawarance ( Larry) Shirk was at the church until about 11:00 p.m. he said “it had been hailing and raining that night so I opened my window to get some fresh air, and than forgot to shut it”. The window that was left open, lead to the Larry’s office which had two PCU’s that were stolen. Nothing else was taken from the church and no vandalism was performed.
